Short Story
Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest Titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a Titan in over 100 years. Until that day.....

PostSubject: Re: Honor the Dead   Honor the Dead - Page 9 EmptyThu Jul 16, 2015 11:31 am

Alan sat on a branch, looking at the sky. He could almost drift off and relax, if it wasn't for the constant howling and barking of the beast under him.
Alan tsked and looked down. "Can't you be a bit more quiet?" he shouted at the wolf. It replied by scratching as the base of the tree.
Over time, 2 more wolves joined the large one. "OH." Alan shouted at them out of frustration "YOU GOT A WHOLE PACK. ISN'T THAT AWESOME."
The sun was growing low. Alan was unsure how well he could survive the night. Maybe he could try and sneak off as the wolves slept.
Alan suddenly listened. He heard a faint sound that was very familiar to him. It was hard to make out due to the howling of the wolves, but it almost sounded like...
"Maneuver gear." Alan said, looking around for the source of the sound.

Connor's eyes started to dart as he began to hear shouting along with the sharp howl of wolves. He leaned and pulled the right trigger, hooking a tree that would curve him in the right direction. Finally he spotted someone high in the trees. He slowed himself by turning and firing a short burst of gas, hooking the branch the wolf victim was on and swinging onto it.

He landed on a knee to keep himself from falling off the branch, and to make sure his weight was distributing a bit more so it wouldn't snap upon landing. He eyed the victim in question, recognizing Alan and that he was unarmed. "You fired that red flare?" Connor asked just to confirm that this wasn't a whole different emergency.

Mitsuo kicked his horse to follow Cora. He didn't see the red flare but he knew that Cora was heading in the direction Connor went. 'Don't fall off,' he repeated in his head. He tightened his grip on the horse's mane. He ignored the pain racing through his back, only wincing every now and then. "I wonder what the situation is," he thought aloud.

Alan looked at Connor when he arrived with an expression of relief on his face. He must've looked pretty bad, with all his bruises and cuts and scratches. Alan became more aware of his bloodstained shirt. He quickly dusted it off with his hands when Connor arrived.
"Oh? This? No, I've just been standing over wolves for a couple of hours without blades, I didn't se-OF COURSE I SENT THE FLARE."
In retrospect, Alan found his manner of speech quite rude, but considering the stress he was under he didn't seem to notice that at the time.
Alan was pretty surprised that Connor found him, of all people. It made it a bit more embarrassing, considering just a day prior they made a vow to ride out together. Alan thought Connor may be feeling regret about that now.
Alan sighed. "Look, I have no horse and the forest is far away from the stables. These are persistent wolves. If you could help me out somehow, that would be great."

PostSubject: Re: Honor the Dead   Honor the Dead - Page 9 EmptyFri Jul 17, 2015 7:38 am

Cora could hear the howling of wolves and she could see them soon afterwards.
"Oh shit.", she whispered and got of her horse. She gave it a pat on the back and it started running back. One wolf turned in her direction.
"Come here…get away from Connor.“, she said. Connor and…was that Alan? Where sitting in the tree. The only thing she could do now was getting them away.
Cora didn’t move as one of the wolves came closer. There was one thing you had to know about them: don’t run. Run and you are dead.
She closed her eyes for a second and listened, she could hear the one wolf coming a bit closer to her. But there was some movement to her right and behind her.
She opened her eyes again. It was a big wolf. Way to big for a normal one. Almost as big as a bear. Why was it so big?
Cora made herself bigger and came closer towards the wolf. She looked directly into his eyes.
If you seem aggressive while walking towards one, they got frightened and chances were that they would go away.
She just stood there right infront of it and was glad that she was 6 feet high (183cm).

Connor sighed in relief, while the situation was a bit silly he was just glad it wasn't a Titan situation. His mind was on the here and now as he looked below to the wolves, of whom their attentions were being drawn away by Cora. He could see that she was trying to intimidate them, but considering the beasts look starved it was quite a gamble. Wolves are more likely to take down larger predators in the wake of hunger. "Then wait here, this will be over soon by fight or flight."

Weighing such a risk, Connor decided to loom above the wolves and wait for the opportune moment, and if Cora's intimidation fails he will slip off his branch and strike down on one of them from above with his machete.

Mitsuo dismounted his horse and sent it back with a pat on the neck. He looked at the situation to think of a solution. 'Intimidating them isn't going to help,' he thought. He noticed Connor looming over the wolves, 'he must be planning something.' "CONNOR, I WANT MY 3DMG BACK ASAP!" His shouting attracted the wolves' attention. Mitsuo instantly thought of the best plan, 'run.' Drawing the wolves away from the tree would help everyone and as soon as he realized this, he started running. Mitsuo thought to himself as he gained distance from the tree, 'I am not going to last long... they probably have more stamina than I do.'

PostSubject: Re: Honor the Dead   Honor the Dead - Page 9 EmptyFri Jul 17, 2015 8:58 am

Alan watched his friends attempt different things, and tsked quietly. He didn't want to critique his saviors, but his high intellect couldn't help but notice the high inefficiency of their maneuvers. It seemed like each one was trying something different at the same time. While Cora was probably trying to intimidate the wolves, Connor was preparing for a stealth strike. While that was happening, Mitsuo grabbed the wolves' attention and started running. The wolves quickly started chasing their game. Alan, not one to let his friend be in danger, jumped off the branch and swung in a wide arch past the running wolves and Mitsuo. He landed near Mitsuo, and shouted at the wolves. "Oi! Over here, you giant potatoes!" he yelled at the wolves, as he swung around a tree using his 3DMG. The wolves, not very intelligible, quickly started following him instead. Alan was relieved. He kept swinging around, not letting the wolves catch up to him. He knew, however, that one wrong move and they'd be upon him.
"Hurry up, guys!" he shouted back at his friends as he kept swinging.

Mitsuo stopped and sighed in relief. "CONNOR, COME HERE I NEED MY 3DMG!" He yelled. He was lucky the wolves were to busy chasing Alan to pay attention to his yelling. He started running towards the tree again to shorten his distance from the male trainee. This was a good time to get his gear back, he had to admit he missed it. 'So, one point for machine, zero points for opposite gender,' he mentally criticized himself.

Cora facepalmed as first Mitsuo and then Alan started running. The wolves disappeared now but this didn't mean it was good.
She understood the wolves. They needed something to eat. And Cora wanted to get them something.
She took a quick look at the horses. No. She couldn't do that. And she couldn't sacrifice some of her friends for wolves.
Dammit.
"We need something to eat for them!", she whispered to herself, something. She didn't know what but she had to find something.

Suddenly everyone around Connor was in a scramble about these wolves, abandoning all tactic and going for confusion. He sighed and obeyed Mitsuo, no longer needing it now that he confirmed for himself that this wasn't a Titan incident. He reeled down quickly and unbuckled the equipment. "Take it quickly, we need to get Alan on a horse." He looked around, holding out Mitsuo's 3DMG in one hand with Ironsoul still firmly grasped in the other.

Mitsuo took back his 3DMG from Connor and equipped himself with it. He nooded, "I'll help Alan distract the wolves while you and Cora think of a plan like get horses or something. " Mitsuo didn't give his friend a chance to reply as he turned and grappled to Alan's whereabouts. When he saw the Unicorn and the wolves he shouted, "HEY! FLEA BAGS OVER HERE!" He attracted the wolves's attention once more to give Alan a chance to rest.

Cora watched Mitsuo as he shouted the wolves turned around and went in his direction.
"Oh shit...", Cora whispered as she saw the wolves running. It was not only Mitsuo's direction. She was between Mitsuo and Alan. She managed to hide from four of the five wolves but the last one saw her.
Cora stood in front of him, he growled. Trying to frighten him now wouldn't work at all.
She didn't move, one sudden movement and he would attack her. Cora looked around to see if she could find something to defend herself. Nothing. The sticks lying on the ground were to small to work as a weapon.
She slowly reached for one of her knives. Suddenly the wolve jumped right at her. Cora turned her head away and managed not to get bit but he still brought her to fall.
Now she was lying on the floor, the wolf above her. She could feel his breath on her face.

One
Two
Three!

Vex took control and chrashed her head into his nose. He howled out of pain and ran away. Vex stood up and looked around to find Mitsuo or the others.

Alan looked at Cora, feeling slightly unsettled. She handled the wolf upon her deftly, but perhaps with too much ferocity. It almost appeared as if something was upon her, but Alan wasn't sure.
"Can I borrow any of your blades?" Alan asked politely. While he wasn't looking forward to killing the wolves, he analyzed doing so would be the best course of action. Their horses are long gone, and the way back to safety passes through a great field, where they won't be able to use their 3DMGs. The only logical course of action would be to eliminate the threat, so he could make sure his friends aren't harmed.
He eyed Cora, who appeared to have some knives, and Connor, who he expected to have a weapon of some kind. While he didn't look like it, Alan was very capable of dealing with confrontations. It was one of his stronger points as a soldier.

Vex looked at Alan. Was that question meant for her?

It was, probably...you can have it as long as you don't let the others know it.

Vex grabbed one of her knives. She threw it up and caught the blade again without hurting herself. She reached the knife to Alan and looked at him.
"I need it back!", she whispered. Cora spoke but Vex had control.

She took a quick look at the wolves and then ran where the horses had gone. She was glad to find at least two of them. She didn't know where the others were. Anywhere but not here.
Vex whisteled and waited for them to come back.
She swung herself on one of its back and rode towards Connor and Alan.

Mitsuo was grappling from tree to tree, staying near the ground to keep the wolves' attention. "Come on... come on..." he muttered through gritted teeth. He knew he could only keep the wolves distracted for so long. 'Either they are gonna loose interest or I'm going to run out of gas,' he thought to himself. He lost track of where the others were, he knew they were nearby as he hasn't strayed too far from them but he was too distracted by keeping the wolves distracted to check.

PostSubject: Re: Honor the Dead   Honor the Dead - Page 9 EmptyMon Jul 20, 2015 9:27 am

Alan nodded in thanks as he grabbed the small blade from Cora. He quietly examined it and checked its balance in his hand. He wasn't used to use small weapons, but he guessed it was either this or nothing.
He turned to look at a wolf that was distracted for the time being. He approached it slowly, arms raised and knife wielded. The wolf quickly noticed him and started howling at him. Alan kept advancing towards it, quiet as ever, slowly circling it. While he felt rather afraid, he didn't particularly fear for his own life. He was fairly certain should things get ugly, his friends would be able to help. He was just afraid his friends could be harmed at all.
After a while, the wolf finally lunged at him, fangs raised. Alan quickly brought his blade down, and stabbed the wolf's body as it jumped at him. The beast let out an inhumane whimper as blood spilled from the wound. Alan was personally made a little sick by the action, but he took his knife out and looked at the wounded animal for a second. It was definitely hurt, and Alan wasn't sure if it was alive or dead. At the moment, it didn't matter, because it certainly wasn't posing a threat anymore to his friends.
Alan sighed and turned to look around for any more wolves that could attack.

Vex looked at Alan and saw him stabbing the wolf. Her mood darkened. He could have done it differently.
She rode to Alan and gave him her horse. She got off and went to the wolf. It was still breathing. Not really but it was still alive.
She sighed and cut its throat.
Vex stood up and looked into the wolves's direction.
Cora took control again and started shouting to get the wolves attention.
The wolves ran into her direction. Cora ran away and quickly climbed up a tree.
They didn't pay any attention to either Alan, Connor, Mitsuo or Cora anymore. There was meat. Delicious meat. It didn't matter that it was one of their own kind.

Alan stood silent as he watched the animals feast upon their own kind. He was reminded of how the titans eat not for survival, but for joy.
He hooked up to Cora and approached her slowly. She looked like her usual self again, her expression less... distant.
"Good thinking back there." he said simply, nodding his head to the beasts near them "An optimal solution that saved us a lot of time."
He wiped the bloody knife on his already rather tainted shirt and handed it to Cora with a slight bow. "Your knife, Cora. Thanks."
The Military Policeman looked down and searched for horses. He saw the total of two - enough to get the entire group back to safety.
"We better get going." Alan shouted back to everyone as he got onto one of the horses. He looked back at his friends, then at the wolves. He felt like he should feel regret for stabbing the eaten wolf, but a simple solution to a big problem was he needed to keep his friends safe. According to Alan, the better good demanded sacrifice.

Connor was a large enough man to wrestle with one of the beasts, keeping Ironsoul between it's gnashing teeth to keep it from being able to get a good bite out of him. His leather jacket protected him from claws that reached out to fight him while he kept the wolf at bay. Finally the dead wolf got their attention and he used the opportunity to regroup with the others, going to Alan and Cora. "I think that's enough excitement for now. Where's Mitsuo?" He asked as he looked about, trying to keep track of everyone.

Mitsuo stopped and looked around. 'They must have changed their attention to something else, ' he thought. He then heard Alan shouting and grappled in the direction of the voice. He saw his friends in the distance before noticing the wolves eating another wolf, "....that's disgusting," he told himself. He walked over to the others, "getting back sounds like the best idea, " he agreed with the Unicorn as he climbed onto the other horse.

Cora looked sadly at the dead wolf. Nec and Vex forced her to look away and she got to Mitsuo and his horse.
She sat behind Mitsuo and layed her arms around his waist to stop her from falling of.

Cora didn't want to say anything right now. She felt bad for killing the wolf. It was weird. She had never felt so bad when she had killed a person. The other thing going around in her head was why it was so easy to kill a human. Shouldn't it be harder? And why did she care more about the wolf than the people?

Nec and Vex stopped her from thinking about it.

Alan waited for Connor to get on the horse, then started riding away. While he was weak and tired from the hours of training and the wolves encounter, his mind was still strong enough to remember the way back to the the stables. Alan looked around as they rode through the forest, keeping an eye out for any wolves, but it seemed like nothing was following them. Alan sighed and kept riding. When they got back into the open fields, Alan sighed with relief. From here it was a straight shot to the stables, and it was clear that they were finally safe.
"Thank you for saving me." Alan said to Connor, but he was unsure if Connor could hear him through the wind blasting at their faces "I.... I wasn't prepared for an encounter like that. I shouldn't have been so reckless..."
Alan thought about his encounter with the wolf. He handled it coldly, and without fault, like he was trained to. This reassured him that he could take care of himself, should he one day venture beyond the walls to the land of the titans. He sat up in his saddle, and kept riding.

Connor could hear Alan well enough, his experience with horseback riding with the Zeus Squad taught him how to adjust his senses on horseback. He patted Alan on the shoulder reassuringly. "At least you are alive, and the situation wasn't as dangerous as it could have been. We'll all be glad for that." Connor wasn't about to talk down to Alan about the wolves. Even he knew they were hard to fight bare handed. He would say little more about it, letting Alan digest whatever lesson could be learned from today's incident.

Mitsuo kept the horse at a steady pace so that he and Cora were riding along side Alan and Connor. He kept silent, thinking about nothing. It's unusual for him to have a clear mind. 'Moving around with my 3DMG like couldn't have done any good for my back,' he thought. As he recalled his injury he winced, feeling the pain as he remembered it.
