Short Story
Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest Titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a Titan in over 100 years. Until that day.....

Alan paced through the pleasant streets of the Inner District. He was aware of his ragged black scarf more than usual. Even as clean as he was, he kept feeling too dirty for the neatly stacked pebbles in the road, and the sophisticated lamps. He looked around him, seeing the rich and happy citizens. On all their faces looks of general contempt. The ones on the outer walls would kill if they were promised lives like yours Al remarked in his mind, his face not giving away any sign of disgust Hell, knowing your kind, you probably  did kill a few in order to stay around here.

Suddenly, his alert eye has caught something out of the ordinary - a small girl with straw-colored hair, probably no older than 9, running into an alleyway, holding a small bag filled with what smelled like food.
Alan sighed and started running after her. He was honestly lucky that she ran into a dead end - he still wasn't that familiar with this town.
Trapped, the girl started sobbing, and fell to her knees. Alan walked up to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "Relax" he said to her, maintaining his  indifferent expression "I mean you no harm."
Alan simply and quietly explained to the girl about the current patrol routes he and he fellow soldiers were given. He told her the easiest way for her to return to beyond the walls, probably where she came from.
Afterwards, he made sure he wasn't being watched by anyone else, and quickly left the alleyway, leaving the girl. He couldn't let himself be caught. That would ruin all his mother worked for. Still, the joy of helping those in need was all the justification he needed to amend the law to his will.
A dangerous trait, he noted.

Living in the Inner District had its perks. Everything was easily accessible and things were kept clean and pretty. People always seemed to smile and laugh and be positive. And all that was good; very good. But it was also very stable; the same, every day. His nights possessed variety most of the time, but mornings were starting to become a tad bit too monotonous for William. Every day he walked around the streets aimlessly, unintentionally searching for the change his system was asking. Something he could catch and hold onto. Something to entertain himself with, even for a little while.

And this particular day, he had found his distraction in the form of a young girl, around the age of eight. He watched her afar, smiling slyly at her amateur thieving skills. he got what she wanted though, as did he, ever so gently and swiftly picking up an apple from a stand next to him and biting into it, without anyone noticing. Where the girl run, he walked slowly; where she looked around nervously, he focused only on her, one hand in his leather jacket's pocket and the other holding the stolen fruit.

He came to a halt a few meters away from the alleyway she went in. A policeman was following her. He looked so young in all the browns and metal of his gear. Was this going to be the end of the little girl's story? Apparently not. Will took another bite off the apple. As he went in, the young man came out. The girl followed after him, running of in another direction. Interesting enough. With quick steps and a hop or two, William was on the young man's side in seconds, casually walking by him. His eyes kept looking forward. "When did the military police start forgiving little street rats? I thought you guys were all mercilessly righteous and stuff," he said almost melodically, a smug smile hiding behind another apple bite.

Alan walked out of the alleyway, pretending to pay attention to those around him. He paid little to no mind to the dark haired individual near him. He had to get back to patrol, before anyone would suspect anything.
"When did the military police start forgiving little street rats? I thought you guys were all mercilessly righteous and stuff,"
Alan stopped walking abruptly. For a split second, a look of sheer terror appeared on his face. However, he quickly got a hold of himself and started walking in the general direction of the gentleman who spoke, trying to keep his best poker face.
"A warning does very little harm." he said simply "I have no time to spend on petty thievery."
Alan truly hoped the man will buy his story. From his looks, he didn't look like a solider or a man of high esteem. That relaxed Alan a little bit, but he was still very tense. He knew that news about his behavior could very easily end his service, and he'll ruin everything his mother worked so hard for. What would she do to him then? Probably lock him in his room for about a week, with no food or water.

"Hmm?" He stopped two feet away from the other man's pause, looking back at him curiously. The little glimpse of terror on his face earned a brief smile from William. It wasn't exactly a happy smile. More of an excited one. Perhaps this soldier would prove to be a better distraction than the little girl. The mature ones were always more fun anyway.

The boy found his steps again, and Will followed after him, keeping a fair distance between them. From afar they might have seemed like friends of some sort, taking a walk together under a glorious sun. They were far from that though. "If you don't have time for thieves, then what do you have time for?" Will dropped the playful tone. "It's not like you have anything else to fight against inside this wall." He took another bite off the apple. It was almost done. The apple, that is. Because his excitement was just starting to brew up.

PostSubject: Re: Enforcing the Law (Open to anyone)   Enforcing the Law (Open to anyone) EmptySun Jun 28, 2015 10:32 am

Alan pondered about the question as he walked the pebbled streets of the Inner City as he walked in front of the mysterious man, almost like a prisoner of war. The way he was treating him, its almost as if he were playing with him, like a curious cat and a new toy. Alan knew he couldn't truly fool him.
"...I don't fight criminals. I fight the unjust, the cruel. I fight those who serve alongside me, even if not directly." he said carefully, hoping he won't regret saying that to somewhat of a stranger "I enforce the true law, the one that punishes the wrong and helps the weak."
Alan tried to catch a glimpse of the young man behind him. He certainly didn't recognize him. His appearance was quite baffling, for he didn't really look or act like the higher class snobs of the city, but if he were an invader, much like the little girl, why would he be showing himself to a patrolsman?
At the moment, Alan was more preoccupied with keeping his job than figuring out the origin of the one who caught him in the act.

His laugh started low, as a chuckle and only got louder with every word that came of of the soldier's mouth. It only stopped when he dropped his half eaten apple on the ground. He looked at it for a mere second and left it there, directing his gaze back to the man with a lingering half-smile on his lips. "Hooo? So, you're the hero type then," William said and quickly hoped enough steps to appear in front of his current plaything. He only walked out of the way and to his side again after he'd gotten a  good look of his face.

He liked the hero types. They were rare to come by. At least the actual ones. A lot of people boasted, but they weren't heroes. They merely said whatever could bring compliments their way. This one seemed more genuine. Maybe Will was wrong. He'd be glad if he was wrong. In all honesty, he preferred surprises to authenticity. His smile wasn't going away anytime soon. "You know, maybe you should change divisions. You don't really fit in this whole... place," he nodded towards their surroundings. Having nothing to hold anymore, he put both his hands in his pockets and leaned back as he walked. His eyes still wouldn't look to the man on his side.

Alan wasn't particularly fond of having his motives laughed at, but at the same time he grew less and less concerned about the mysterious young man. A man who suggested for him to perhaps switch divisions wouldn't want him to lose his job. That would be extremely... cruel.
The man rushed forward seemingly to catch a good glimpse of Al's face. Alan tried to keep a straight face, but he was honestly pretty embarrassed.
"To be honest, you don't really seem to fit here as well. " Alan said, eyeing the long haired man to see if he could get any reaction from him "You're lucky you ran into me. A normal patrolsman would've had you up for interrogation by now."
Alan couldn't help but notice the half-eaten apple that the man left on the ground. It made him inwardly cringe, the tainting of clean things.

The soldier was changing faces as if they were clothes, and William could only deepen his smile at them. Yes, this was definitely more fun than watching little girls steal from the rich of the Inner District. "Is it my choice of clothing?" He looked down on himself with a pretentiously confused look. He even dusted off his jacket as if to make it more presentable. He then proceeded to turn his head up and to the side, staring deeply at the boy's eyes, as if linked to them by an invisible chain.

"Interrogation?" He let a droplet of fear paint his eyes. Of course, he wasn't scared. He never really was scared of anything. But he'd found through the years that letting wild emotions escape you could affect the ones around you too. He'd already seen fear and embarrassment paint this boy's face, but it wasn't enough. He wanted more.

Alan was already beginning to feel guiltier and guiltier as the civilian went on. He certainly didn't wish to criticize his clothing, or make him feel fear. He was quite dumbfounded for words.
"L-look, I...." he started saying, but he didn't know what to say. He was blushing a little bit.
He stopped to face him, and tried to reorganize his thoughts.
"What I tried to say was that you behave very differently than most people here. I guess we're similar in that regard..." Alan's voice trailed off.
"Look, I really need to get back on patrol. You won't tell anyone about the little girl, right?" Alan asked, trying to seem friendly and not nervous like he actually was. He wasn't very good at talking, or making friends for that matter. That's one of the reasons he usually kept his mouth shut.

William tried his best to keep a straight face. It was difficult and his efforts soon went to waste as he burst into laughter yet again. His whole body folded in half and he had to stop and take a moment to regain his composure. When he came to, a large grin sat on his face. "Are we? Are we really that similar?" He let his eyes trail off to the busy people going about their business around them. They all had a reason to walk. Big or small. They had something they needed to complete. Even this young man next to him had his goal. Protect the weak and punish the unjust, he said. Will didn't have a goal. He didn't walk every day to be someone. He merely walked to see others be themselves. They weren't similar at all. But he didn't dare say any of that out loud.

"Well then, maybe we should both change stories. Maybe this," he pointed around aimlessly, "doesn't suit either of us. Who knows." His grin relaxed into another smile. He liked this one. He didn't want to dry him up from their first meeting. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone." William ruffled his hair. The fact that they both had the same height didn't help with the situation, but he still couldn't help himself. "Before you go though, would you care to tell me the name of this heroic soldier who happens to live in the wrong place?"

Mitsuo was walking down the busy street, not paying attention to what was going on around him. 'Ah, it's good to be nice taking a stroll once in a while!' he mentally praised. He was pulled out of his peaceful thoughts at sudden laughter. He looked to his left to see a civilian with a Military Policeman, 'tch, do they have to be so loud?' He stopped and squinted in annoyance. He didn't feel like confronting them so settled with the idea of criticizing them from afar.

PostSubject: Re: Enforcing the Law (Open to anyone)   Enforcing the Law (Open to anyone) EmptyMon Jun 29, 2015 9:19 am

The long haired man seemed quite prone to laughter. Jovial faces were indeed rare in these times, especially in the Inner City where people were so stuck up about manners and dignity that confessing their emotions was considered ill-mannered. It seemed like Alan wasn't the only one to percieve this as odd for this location, for some civilians stopped to look at the laughing man. It also seemed that this man wasn't going to let society tell him what to do. Alan liked that, considering this society also enforced the punishment of hungry children.
Alan thought for a bit about the young man's statement, of them perhaps not doing what's best suited for them. Alan always felt that he would be much more proud serving as a green cloak, truly making a change and bringing hope to a world in dire need of it. It was as if the young man understood a large part of him, despite the fact they just met. A remarkable trait, yet a dangerous one too.
Then Alan was asked of his name, after the stranger ruffled his hair.
Alan was quite cautious about this, seeing as he was caught in the act by this guy. Giving him his name would not be the smartest thing. Then again, for some strange reason Alan felt like he could trust him. Maybe it was his easygoing demeanor, his feminine features or his way of playing those around him.
Alan stopped and saluted the civilian with respect. "Alan Kaltewande, patrolsman of the Military Police." he exclaimed, almost with pride. He relaxed his stance and offered a shake to the young man "And what is your name, if I may ask?"

Mitsuo scoffed. A Military Policeman saluting a civilian, what an idiot. It was interesting to watching though so he turned his body to face the two men. He didn't care if he was obviously watching them, he wanted to watch this without missing a detail. He strained to listen on their conversation so he could understand what's going on better.

He mimicked the pride of the boys stance in his face, praising almost, like a parent would their child after they'd done something notable. William wasn't sure if Alan was actually being fully serious with this introduction or if he had finally let his walls down and played along. Either way, it was amusing. Once the whole saluting business was over and done with, William reluctantly took the other's hand and shook it softly like he did as Marian -that is, when people didn't insist on kissing his hand instead of handshakes-. "You can call me William," he said reassuringly. "Next time we meet, I might also tell you my last name~" He wouldn't. And even if he did, it wouldn't be his real one. He knew when far was too far; when risk could turn into downfall.

From the corner of his eye, he caught glimpse of a persistent stare. He let it be for a bit. It wasn't the first time he received this sort of look. And he guessed Alan's presence was helping quite a lot too. Well, more fun. He focused back to the boy in front of him. "Off you go then. Your Patrol awaits!" William bowed down theatrically and gave a last smile to Alan, before leaving him to his own business.

His eyes didn't waste time, and immediately ventured off in the direction of the staring man. Once he'd found them, he locked his eyes on his and his smile shifted into a smirk. His steps were light but quick, and only stopped two feet away from the brown haired man. "Was it my eyes? Or perhaps my lips? Or was it my whole face altogether?" He swayed from side to side as he spoke, like a dreaming maiden thinking of her white knight. "What is it that keeps your eyes focused on me so intensely, oh handsome one?" He just couldn't stop playing today.

Alan looked at William's face for a split second before he nodded in approval and headed to his patrol route. The young man's face had a somewhat similar look to them, but Alan couldn't quite put his finger on it. By now, I should be two blocks from here he reminded himself, and then sighed.  He politely turned from William, and started pacing quickly to his destination.

That was completely out of line he scolded himself You shouldn't have given him your name, and certainly shouldn't have been caught. What would your mother say? his inner voice asked. He laughed internally, but outside only a smirk was revealed. His mother wasn't of the 'saying' type, really. She was more of the 'doing' type. And by 'doing' he meant 'beating'. He shook his head and regained focus. Alan looked around the road, which now turned from pebbles to brick. Alan did prefer brick roads - much more organized and smooth. If you find another petty thief, as much as you want to help them, you must punish them. Not severely, but do. You gotta lay low for a while, even if it means doing what you are actually paid to do he told himself. Alan gritted his teeth and kept pacing along the brick road, looking for more troublemakers.

Mitsuo scowled in reply. "Tsk, how could a civilian mamahe to obtain a salute from a Military Policeman? " He questioned, toneless. He would be lying if he said he didn't really care as he was actually curious. "Either that's one dumb Patrolsman or you're one persistent guy," he loudly judged. 'If this man is the persistent type I'm done for,' he mentally complained.

So, he wasn't a joker, and he wasn't the innocent type either. William was somewhat disappointed. He'd had enough of the snobs ones. Such a shame. Maybe the distractions were over for today. "What if its both?" He said, his shoulders somewhat relaxing and his hands finding their way into his pockets again. "Either way, you seem awfully interested. How come?" Wouldn't hurt to have a brief chat at least. He liked talking anyway.

Mitsuo smirked at the civilian's words. "If it's both I should be laughing until tears form in my eyes like you did a minute ago." He shrugged, "Usually I try to avoid people but you seem interesting. The first civilian I've seen saluted by a Military Policeman," he commented. 'He doesn't seem that interested in me though, I wonder if I could turn that around...' He mentally challenged himself. "So what's a laughing stock like you hanging around in these parts for?" He questioned in return, quite curious of what his answer would be and he didn't mind letting this shown on his face.

"Well, I'm special like that." He cut off a chuckle. Was this a chance to play a little more? The corners of his lips curled up. Curiosity was a gateway to endless possibilities. William wasn't going to waste it. "Is it bad to laugh around here? I haven't heard of such rule before. This is a safe and prosperous place, is it not?" He placed his question challengingly. He could have exclaimed a simple 'I live here', but no; he refused to fall to such level of simplicity. What was life without thrill?

Mitsuo smirked and nodded in respect to his question. "No, there's no such rule. But don't you think some snobs around here will hate you for it?" He counter-questioned, pointing to people around him, "the only reason they live is for money, I think they would hate themselves if they didn't have it!" He laughed at his comment, leaving a mischievous grin upon his face. 'This guy is actually quite fun,' he admitted, 'I can't remember the last time I had this kind of fun.' He raised an eyebrow, again curious to what the man's response will be, he hoped he was going to be challenging... he liked the challenging types.

Had he found an outsider or a pretender? He still couldn't quite determine the nature of this man. His clothing didn't speak of wealth or of poverty. He seemed well groomed, yet not as much as the rest of people in this area. William found himself rudely staring. He didn't budge though. He kept exploring as the man spoke. He even took a moment before replying, just to make sure the other noticed his boldness. "You speak as though you're not one of them." A small breeze passed by. "Then again, if you were, you would most likely be spitting insults at me under your breath right now." Without warning, William stepped forward in a swift movement and closed the gap between them. His nose was inches away from the man's mouth, William's eyes looking up at his with just a glimpse of curiosity in them. "So, if you're not one of those petty snobs, then what are you?"

Mitsuo raised an eyebrow. He thought he made that obvious but apparently not quite. He chuckled as he said his answer, "I'm my own man! But now it's your turn, what are you?" He turned the question back on the smaller man, if he was a poor civilian he wouldn't be able to be in here, right? And he definitely isn't a rich snob. Mistuo would mention about the man breaching his personal space and how that is poor manners but he didn't want to sound like one of the rich right now.

He ignored the insufficient answer and focused on the redirected question. "What am I? What am I indeed." He stepped back, letting the air flow freely between them again.
